I loved her patterned coat and athletic build. I already knew Bri's mother through lure coursing and I didn't end up meeting her father, but I did meet his sister, Kepi and I loved her temperament and Fraggle-hairdo. I made a point to meet as much of Bri's family as I could, and admired different things about both sides of her pedigree. All were great running, racing and open field coursing dogs, and above all I wanted a performance dog.
Brienne's first litter wasn't the best timing for me but when her second litter was announced as her having been line-bred to a racing dog from Germany, I couldn't resist inquiring even though I was in the middle of a move. The sire, Dahar, is by all accounts a wonderful boy, with a lovely temperament and great athleticism. Eddie and Selma were kind enough to agree to hold a puppy for me until my move was complete, so I left the choice of puppy fully in their trusted hands and waited to meet whichever puppy it would be. They chose just the right girl for my large and active pack of dogs. Fleura is bold and fearless. She has a wildly strong prey drive and a strong competitive spirit. There's nothing soft about her at all, but she has a really lovely, balanced temperament. She gets along with all dogs, and has been thrown in with a whole variety of dog groups and blended in beautifully. She is vocal, and not afraid of asserting herself, but she does so in the manner of a socially confident dog who knows she doesn't have to be abusive to be assertive. In short, she's a wonderful, confident girl. With people, she will be dignified and a little reserved in public. She enjoys attention and petting, but doesn't necessarily show off her silly, mischievous side straight off. At home, she is silly, very cuddly, and likes to play pranks. One of her favorite pranks, from the time she was a tiny pup, is to wait until your back is turned at then to (gently) pinch your butt. As soon as you spin around, she will playbow you and dance around. She loves to play, and will race around the yard doing laps with a toy in her mouth. She loves to race the other dogs and play tug. In terms of performance, Fleura lives to run. She puts her all in every time she runs, and she's achieved beyond all expectations. She does great on bags, but her prey drive is extra intense on a real skin or squawker, and she's wild for live game. She has learned to hunt like the Ibizans, and she can dig up a field rat in seconds. She also LOVES water and will spend most of the day in a pond if you let her. In 2022, Fleura made history by becoming the first Afghan Hound to be awarded the AKC National Field Champion title, after winning Best in Event at the National Lure Coursing Championship. |
